Why your first trip abroad can change everything

Traveling is something everyone knows is important. It’s exciting, it’s fun, and it opens your eyes to new cultures. But what people often don’t talk about is the discomfort. Buying expensive tickets, choosing hotels, planning every step, sitting on a long flight, leaving your comfort zone - it can feel painful at times.

And yet, this discomfort is exactly what makes travel so transformative. Because what you get out of it is far greater than the struggle.

If you want to truly master Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or any other language, your first trip to that country can change everything. That trip becomes the first domino. You see the culture firsthand, you hear the language all around you, and suddenly, you’re more motivated than ever.

That’s exactly what happened to me...

The first time I came to Korea in 2016, I was amazed. I bought a Korean textbook, tried learning by myself, failed miserably, went back to China, and later enrolled in proper courses. Over time, that first trip turned into a dream to become fluent in Korean… and eventually, to live in Korea. Today, I’m living that dream.

Travel is never just about travel. It’s about freedom. The freedom to live where you want, to work where you want, and to connect with people in a deeper way. Language gives you that freedom - and travel is the spark that starts it all.

So my recommendation to you is simple: plan that first trip. Even if it feels uncomfortable now, even if it feels “impossible.” Years from now, you’ll look back and realize it was the best decision you ever made.

Because everything begins with that first step out of your comfort zone.
