The Truth About Learning Korean

A lot of people ask me how to learn Korean - or any foreign language. In this email, I want to focus specifically on Korean, because it’s one of the most misunderstood languages when it comes to difficulty.

I’ve developed a method I call the Accelerator Method, which I’ve used not only for Korean but also for other languages. It’s a mix of traditional strategies and new approaches that most people don’t know about. The core of the method is simple: choose the best textbook series and go through it as quickly as possible. Not just any textbooks - the right textbooks.

Now, here’s the reality: Korean is what I call a grammatically heavy language. Most of its difficulty lies in the grammar. In fact, Korean is ranked as a Category 5 language - the hardest level in the world. Only a few languages are in this group: Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, and Cantonese.

Many people have the misconception that Korean is “easy” just because it uses an alphabet. I thought the same when I started. And yes, you can memorize the alphabet quickly - but reading rules, sound changes, consonant/vowel combinations? That’s another story. The sounds often change in ways that are very unintuitive, and it takes years to fully grasp how they merge.

On top of that, Korean grammar is extremely complex. Unlike Chinese, which expresses ideas mostly with words, Korean expresses them with grammar patterns. Things like emotions, opinions, and tense are “built” into the grammar itself. And unlike Japanese, which stacks grammar structures more straightforwardly, Korean grammar involves what I call “merging” - where one structure penetrates and changes another. This makes it even harder to master.

Add to that the multiple levels of politeness and the cultural rules of when to use them, and you start to see why Korean is not just about learning words - it’s about learning how to think and interact like a Korean.

Now, this might sound intimidating, but here’s the good news:

  • If you expect Korean to be difficult, you’ll stick with it longer.

  • If you use the right system, it becomes manageable - even enjoyable.

  • And yes, you can reach a conversational level in 3–6 months if you study the right way.

For me, that’s the exciting part: learning a language that most people give up on. Think of it this way -Korean takes about 3–4 times the effort of Spanish, but with the right approach, you’ll stand out with a skill very few people in the world achieve.

So if you’ve been thinking about learning Korean, I hope this email clears up the misconceptions and gives you more motivation. It’s hard, yes - but if you make it easy with the right methods, it will become one of the most rewarding challenges of your life.
