Most people know Korean today as the Hangul alphabet. But it wasn’t always like this.

For centuries, Koreans only used Chinese characters. Then came a mix of characters + alphabet. Finally, in the late 20th century, characters were phased out of daily use.

When I visited the Hangul Museum in Seoul, I was shocked to see old newspapers from the 70s and 80s still filled with Chinese characters. Go back even further, and you’ll see even more of them.

Even now, characters haven’t completely disappeared. Koreans still learn a basic set of them in school - often 100+ - and most Koreans know the Chinese characters for their own names. Some even take classes in Chinese or Japanese, where characters are central.

Here’s why this matters for you.

Most foreign learners of Korean only see random syllables and sounds. But if you know Chinese characters, suddenly those “random sounds” have meaning.

When I started learning Korean, my background in Chinese gave me a huge advantage. I could guess the meanings of countless words because they were directly tied to characters I already knew. Nobody had ever told me about this hack - but it worked.

That’s why I teach my Korean coaching clients a secret strategy: Learn the basic Korean characters (at least 200 of the most common ones).

Once you do this, something amazing happens

  • Words stop feeling random.

  • Memorization gets faster.

  • Guessing meanings becomes natural.

Your learning curve shifts from slow and flat… to exponential.

This isn’t a flashy “10 phrases you need to know” tip. This is a fundamental shift in how you learn the language. And once you build on fundamentals, your progress compounds. The more you learn, the faster you learn, the more motivated you stay.

Nobody talks about this - but it can change everything.

Hope this helps, Victor
